Teaching research papers to 5th graders
Students will write their research reports in paragraph form. I created five screencast videos, one for each step of the research report process. When students write research reports about topics of interest, they are fine-tuning their reading and writing skills.
To begin, we read the book, Pompeii. Students examine informational text, use an inquiry-based approach, and practice genre-specific strategies for expository writing.

Teaching the procedure for citing sources is important because my 5th grade students need to grasp the reality of plagiarism and how to avoid it. Some teachers might want you to format your paper in a certain way, for example, or include photos or other graphics. It is divided into sections that align with the main idea of each paragraph. Have a parent read it to check for anything confusing or incorrect. Using this formula approach helps students understand the basic format of a paragraph and how the paragraphs blend together to form a report. As part of publishing, students are asked to incorporate text features that are frequently found in nonfiction text. Whether you choose natural disasters or any other topic to delve into with your students, I'm sure you will feel as excited to see your students rise to this writing challenge as I do every year! An instructional scaffold is useful for expository writing because of its basis in problem solving, ownership, appropriateness, support, collaboration, and internalization. After approximately three weeks from start to finish, the students have a finished report they can proudly share with classmates and parents!
First, the skill involved in finding reliable sources and citing sources is valuable. An instructional scaffold essentially changes the role of the teacher from that of giver of knowledge to leader in inquiry. Step 4: Make it a Team Effort Putting students into groups by topics allows them to help and support each other through researching, writing, editing, and publishing.

Just as I did with note-taking, I visit each team at their headquarters at least once a day while they are writing independently. I find that my students generally use books and internet sources, so those are the two types of citations that I focus on. I prefer a typed final draft because students will have access to a spellchecker and other features that will make it easier to create their final draft. I do provide instruction and examples during this step because from experience, I know that students will think every piece of information from each source is important and they will copy long passages from each source. Each year students are fascinated to learn how repeated eruptions of Mount Vesuvius covered an entire city that no one even realized existed for centuries.
